A New Artistic Director at ANAM in 2016

We are delighted to announce the appointment of internationally acclaimed Australian oboist Nick Shay Deutsch to succeed Paul Dean as Artistic Director of ANAM in 2016.

“Following an intensive international search we are delighted to have enticed Nick back to Australia to harness the energies of our musicians and to lead ANAM in the next phase of our dynamic upward trajectory”, Ian McRae, Chariman of the ANAM Board, said. “First and foremost Nick is an incomparable musician. He is someone from whom our musicians will learn much, and gain huge inspiration. He has worked with the world’s greatest artists, sat in prestigious European orchestras and performed as a soloist for 20 years, and he will bring this impeccable experience to ANAM and to our musicians. He is also an experienced teacher and pedagogue at the highest international level, and is currently Professor of Oboe at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig.”

Nick Deutsch said on his appointment “I am immensely excited and proud to follow in the footsteps of Brett and Paul Dean to lead this extraordinary institution. I have worked with young musicians in schools around the world, but on my visits to ANAM I have always found that this one offers something special. The skills and ability of these musicians are comparable to the best anywhere, but the spirit and energy, the hunger to discover new ways is uniquely Australian. ANAM is perhaps one of the country’s best kept secrets, and I am absolutely determined to change that”.

Ian McRae said “The ANAM Board is confident that Nick will contribute significantly to ANAM’s goal of being recognised as one of the world’s leading music training institutions by 2020. With the strong support of the Commonwealth, our principal funding partner, Nick Deutsch will ensure that ANAM’s reputation for excellence and its visionary and uniquely Australian approach to creating the musical leadership of tomorrow is delivered to the world”.

Nick will commence at ANAM in February 2016, and will give the world premiere of a new work for oboe and orchestra by Paul Dean as part of ANAM’s 2016 Season Opening concert with the ANAM Orchestra on Saturday 5 March.
