Study at the Academy

Studying at the Academy

Studying at the Academy is akin to being immersed in a year-long masterclass with some of the world’s finest soloists, orchestral and chamber musicians, conductors and teachers.
Brett Dean

The Australian National Academy of Music is a unique institution for training the country’s finest classical musicians. With an emphasis on individual growth through tailored programs, ANAM is committed to supporting talented musicians in refining and strengthening their individual musical voice, thereby empowering them to address the exciting challenges and possibilities of a life in music in the 21st century.

The Academy is a music performance training institution, and as such performance – in solo, chamber and orchestral music – sits at the centre of the Academy’s curriculum, which is defined each year by the repertoire and projects that make up the year’s concert schedule.

Academy Musicians participate in a rigorous program of individual and class instruction, chamber and orchestral training and extensive performance practice. In the course of the Academy’s year musicians are exposed to a variety of opinions and ideas from leading performers and pedagogues from around Australia and the world.

In 2010 ANAM will support the study of strings, woodwind, French horn and piano for the 55 musicians undertaking the yearlong program. All musicians accepted into the Academy’s annual program receive scholarships to cover the cost of tuition and the Academy’s activities. In addition to this subsidy, there are bursaries available to some musicians to cover living expenses, and rental assistance is available. The Academy is based at the South Melbourne Town Hall.
