Performance Program
At the core of the Academy’s program is private instruction, practice and performance experience. A focused and intense training environment through weekly or twice weekly lessons forms the backbone of a musician’s experience at the Academy. In addition to regular tuition, visiting artists provide two to three lessons to each musician for the term of their residency.
Group classes are offered for all musicians, which include regular audition training and orchestral sectional excerpt reading sessions where appropriate. From time to time facilitators conduct sessions in improvisation and composition.
Public masterclasses with visiting artists are a key component of the Academy’s instrumental instruction. The roster of visiting artists presenting masterclasses in 2010 includes Johannes Moser, Midori, Paavali Jumppanen, Dimitry Ashkenazy and the Pavel Haas String Quartet.
Public performance forms the context for all of the Academy’s activity, and in 2010 the Academy will be presenting over 160 public performances. The musicians of the Academy experience frequent performance opportunities across a broad range of repertoire as soloists, accompanists, chamber musicians and members of ensembles and orchestras. In addition to public concerts, weekly performances are presented to Faculty and colleagues in classes and performance forums. The Academy provides free access to associate pianists for these activities.
Chamber music performance and coaching also forms a central part of the Academy’s course of study. The Faculty, visiting artists and musicians of the Academy will be performing more than 80 works from the chamber music repertoire in 2010. Ensembles are coached by resident and visiting musicians and ensembles, including in 2010 the Brodsky Quartet, Australian Brass Quintet, the Atos Trio, french hornist Barry Tuckwell, and pianist Boris Berman.
The Orchestra of the Academy rehearses on a project basis, giving up to six performances each year. In 2010 the Orchestra’s roster of conductors will include Simone Young, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Anthony Marwood, Richard Tognetti and Brett Dean.
The Academy values its close relationship with ABC Classic FM and 3MBS FM. Musicians’ performances are frequently broadcast nationally via ABC Classic FM, and Academy Musicians present ‘live-to-air’ broadcasts each month as part of 3MBS FM’s education program.
