Tara Houghton began musical studies on the violin, at the age of seven. She entered the Young Conservatorium program in 2002 and commenced lessons with Michele Walsh. After acceptance into the Queensland Conservatorium, Tara began playing the viola in chamber music and in 2005, changed her principal study to viola.
During her time at the Conservatorium, Tara was the Principal Viola in all Conservatorium Orchestras, as well as the string ensemble Divertimenti. She also won many awards and scholarships, including the FW and EG Harmer Memorial Scholarship, the Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Award and the Ross Peters/4MBS Chamber Music Prize. Graduating in 2007, Tara was awarded a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours (Performance).
In 2008, Tara commenced study with Roger Benedict, at the Australian National Academy of Music. She has participated in various Australian Youth Orchestra programs, most recently as Principal Viola of AYO, but also including career development programs with both the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.
Tara is also violist in the Euphoria String Quartet, who recently toured with William Barton, for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. Euphoria String Quartet also won the 2007 Gertrude Langer Ensemble Prize and undertook a tour of regional Queensland with the Queensland Arts Council.
