Rebecca Chan began her musical studies at an early age on both violin and piano and has been performing since the age of four. At the age of fifteen she commenced a combined degree in Medicine and Arts at the University of Melbourne while continuing to pursue her violin studies at the university’s Conservatorium with William Hennessy. After completing her degrees Rebecca studied with Alice Waten at the Australian National Academy of Music in 2004 and 2005 and returned in 2007 having completed her medical internship. In her time at ANAM she has also received tuition from and performed with other numerous international and local visiting artists, including Felix Andrievsky, Oleh Krysa, Boris Kuschnir and Daniel Gaede. In 2007 she attended the Salzburg Mozarteum Sommerakademie studying with Igor Ozim and Paul Roczek, and was invited to perform in several concerts there. Rebecca has won numerous major prizes at eisteddfods and has also been a prizewinner in the Gisborne International competition, the Hephzibah Menuhin award, the Melbourne University JS Bach prize and was a finalist in the 2005 Dorcas Maclean Scholarship. She has twice won the ANAM concerto competition (in 2005 and 2007) and has been a soloist with a number of orchestras including Australia Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the ANAM orchestra, the Melbourne University Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, and a number of community orchestras. Many of these performances have been broadcast on national radio. Rebecca is a very keen chamber musician and has collaborated with or been tutored by notable ensembles including the Borodin, Artemis, Petersen and Henschel Quartets. As a member of the Hamer Quartet she has performed extensively around Melbourne, regional Victoria as well as interstate, and been invited to perform in many festivals including the Norfolk and Norwich Festival in England, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Melba Festival and the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival. In 2008, Rebecca won the Symphony Australia Young Performers Award String Finals.
Rebecca is a core member of the Australia Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and plays regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
