James Cowell has been an ANAM Academy Musician since 2005, and is presently studying with Howard Penny and Nicholas Bochner. James Cowell began his cello studies with Takao Mizushima in Sydney. At 16 he began learning from Principal Cellist of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Zoltan Szabo. James Cowell has also studied with Alexander Baillie. He received a full music scholarship to his high school, where he had many opportunities to perform as a soloist. He completed his music HSC one year early as an accelerated music student. During his senior years he participated in the Sydney Conservatorium Access Program. James Cowell was invited and travelled to Japan in 1998 to take part in the cultural celebrations of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, performing in a concert of children from all around the globe. James Cowell has participated in masterclasses with such cellists as Thomas Demenga, Paul Watkins and Pieter Wispelwey.
He works casually with Orchestra Victoria and has also done much session work, including for the score of Peter Weir’s Master and Commander.
